The Lamia is the main antagonist of the film Drag Me to Hell. It is also referred to as "The Black Goat" and is said to be the most feared of all Demons.

See also, Lamia curse

The Lamia is part of a curse that is often summoned by gypsies for their darkest deeds as a way of getting revenge on those who would wrong them in life. For the first three days, the Lamia appears as a nasty ghost that torments its victim. Afterwards, it reveals itself to be a taker of souls, and comes for the owner of an accursed object. The only way to stop the Lamia is to either have it possess another being and kill it, offer it a sacrifice (which is proven in the film to not work, though it is unknown if a bigger or more than one sacrifice would have worked), or give the accursed object to someone else, which will send that person to Hell instead.

Shaun is possessed

In an attempt to stop the Lamia from taking Christine Brown, Shaun San Dena, a medium, allowed herself to be possessed by it and then have it possess a goat so her assistant, Milos may slay it in a ritual. However, after the goat was possessed, Milos accidentally cut the rope instead of the goat's head, freeing the possessed goat which in turn, bites him, causing him to be possessed. Milos then went to taunt Christine when Rham, a fortune teller who had been helping at the ritual, woke up Shaun who had grown unconscious after the demon left her body. Shaun then was able to banish the spirit, causing Milos to return to his original state.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Reality Manipulation: The Lamia is capable of altering reality when it is tormenting its targeted victim.
  • Illusion Casting: The Lamia is able to make its victims hallucinate and see things that are not really there. Best shown when it took the form of Sylvia Ganush's blind eye in Christine's cake.
  • Possession: Being a supernatural entity, the Lamia has the ability to possess human beings and control them against their will.
  • Portal Opening: Unless the curse has either been lifted, or the Lamia has been slain, when the victim's time is up, the Lamia will tear a hole in the ground, from which fiery, demonic hands will manifest and literally drag the cursed victim down into Hell, where they will suffer an eternity of unthinkable torment.
  • Manifestation: The Lamia can make itself appear at will in a variety of ways, such as casting ominous shadows on walls, emitting high-pitched shrieking and roaring sounds, and even projecting its face across windows and screens.
  • Object Manipulation: The Lamia is also capable of manipulating inanimate beings, such as pots and pans when announcing its presence. Best shown when it lifts Christine up off the floor and drags her around her room with curtains swinging, objects flying, glasses shattering.
  • Voice Manipulation: When a human being or an animal is being possessed by the Lamia, their voice will begin to sound layered and demonic. It will sound like a mix between how they naturally sound, combined with an unnaturally deep and gargling tone.
  • Telekinesis: Like other spirits and entities, the Lamia can manipulate objects using its mind. Best shown when it made the front door of Christine's house open and slam shut by itself.
